Valve believes that users have every right to open up the upcoming Steam Deck console. However, it is not something that is recommended. Instead, they have now opened up the console themselves and shown its insides on film.
Many are looking forward to Valve’s handheld PC console Steam Deck starting to appear among consumers. Valve has realized that if it is possible to disassemble a unit, someone will disassemble units to satisfy their curiosity. While the manufacturer has said that customers have every right to do this, it is not something they recommend.
Instead, they have now published a video where Valve themselves disassemble their new unit. This in the hope of showing how tightly packed the inside measure is and satisfying the curious who want to unscrew the unit.
After removing eight screws from the unit, it is then possible to remove its back. Here, however, we are met by a unit whose internal components are anything but easy to pick out. First of all, Valve recommends disconnecting the battery. Something that is easier said than done as its connection is hidden under the radiation shield that encloses the SSD and the module for wireless connection.
The internal SSD unit is also something that can be anything but easy to replace if desired. Valve has equipped this with its own radiation shield to reduce interference between this and other components. The shield is also soldered to the storage unit so that transferring it to a replacement becomes more or less impossible.
A lot has been pushed into Steam Deck and while it is technically possible for users to disassemble their device and Valve says that you CAN is not something that is recommended. Opening up your Steam Deck does nothing negative with its warranty. However, this does not cover any potential damage to the internal components.
