After “The Mitchell vs. the Machines,” Phil Lord and Chris Miller are back on Netflix with a wacky comedy about America’s Founding Fathers. “America: The Movie” offers another version of the story of George Washington, a chain-sawing vigilante in search of freedom and voiced by Channing Tatum.
America, The movies : birth of a nation
Just two months later The Mitchell vs. the Machines, Netflix unveils America: The movies, a new animated film produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller – the duo behind 21 Jump Street and The Great Lego Adventure. The tandem collaborates again with Channing Tatum. The actor also officiates as a producer, but especially lends his voice to the main character.
The latter is none other than the illustrious George Washington, the first president of the United States. After the assassination of his best friend Abraham Lincoln by the traitor Benedict Arnold, the hero in the making does not intend to give up the democratic ideals of his BFF. Armed with two chainsaws, he manages to escape the red tunics and decides to embark on a vengeful crusade, determined to defeat the British oppressor.
But George Washington quickly learns thata revolution does not happen alone. He therefore assembles a shock team, made up in particular of Samuel Adams, a great lover of beer and fraternities, and Thomas Edison, a young scientist accused of being a witch and creator of formidable weapons. Meanwhile, the infamous King James makes his arrival on this new world he wants to conquer. But, fortunately, these vigilantes intend to instill in him the definition of the word freedom.
In the tradition ofArcher
America: The movies revisits the US War of Independence in its own way. In this crazy project, the AT-M6 vehicles of Star Wars take the form of London buses, the bust of a centaur is none other than RoboCop and the gang led by George Washington must fight against a werewolf, while preventing tea from turning the inhabitants of the continent into English.
The references and hilarious ideas follow one another, the script by Dave Callaham (The Expendables: Special Unit, Jean-Claude Van Johnson) constantly going all over the place. Something to delight fans of Team America, police of the world and especially ofArcher. Directed by Matt Thompson, executive producer of the series, America: The movies visually approximates the spy program.
Casting side, Olivia Munn ensures the dubbing of Thomas Edison, Andy Samberg that of Benedict Arnold and Simon Pegg that of King Jacques. Judy Greer, Killer Mike and Will Forte complete this prestigious cast.
Satire who constantly plays on anachronisms, America: The movies takes pleasure in twisting history to tackle the excesses of the American system. Vulgar and outrageous, the feature film defies the laws of morality and does not hesitate to do without any coherence. It thus asserts itself as a regressive entertainment that is necessarily pleasing.
