This is one of the measures decided by the municipality of Chartres as part of the peaceful city project: from the beginning of November 2021, motorists will no longer have free access to rue Chantault.
The bounded meeting zone thus extends towards the lower town. Since August, traffic has already been reduced on rue du Rempart-Châtelet: a terminal has been installed to limit traffic to residents and deliveries.
“Protecting the heritage of our historic city”
“The objective is to protect the heritage of our historic city,” recalls Guillaume Bonnet, deputy mayor responsible for improving the living environment. The narrow streets in this area are not designed for automobile traffic. “
The elected official notes that many motorists circulate in this sector to avoid taking the boulevards of the city center. They will no longer have a choice.

Launched Monday, October 4, the installation work on the rue Chantault terminal will take four weeks. The lower part of rue Chantault is closed to traffic and a diversion has been set up towards rue du cloître Saint-André, the direction of which is reversed.
Access badge
When the terminal is operational, residents must have an access badge to circulate in the sector. Other users must use the intercoms at the terminals to request access to the limited meeting area.
