Office World Health Organization (WHO) said that people who were not vaccinated ‘died in vain’ as a result COVID-19. WHO also reminded that the global vaccine gap is one of the main obstacles to fighting corona virus.
In a question-and-answer session on his social media channels as reported by CNBC.com, Wednesday (6/10/2021), WHO officials said that around 56 countries failed to achieve the WHO’s target goal of doing vaccination by 10% of the total population until the end of September.
Technical lead COVID-19 WHO, Maria Van Kerkhove said increasing access to vaccines would help reduce deaths from COVID-19 and hospitalizations at a time when the world has recorded nearly 5 million virus-related deaths.
“Not meeting targets is a sad thing; it’s more than sad, more than frustrating,” Kerkhove said.
He further added, “This cannot be described in words, I have to say, because if we had used the more than 6 billion vaccines that have been administered today differently, we would be in a very, very different situation now.”
According to Kerkhove, the data COVID-19 vaccine clearly demonstrates that vaccines are safe and effective in preventing hospitalization and death.
“The vaccines just need to be accessible to more people,” he said. “The result of this (vaccine inequality) is people dying in vain,” he added.
