“I can’t go back, but I take this opportunity to apologize to all those close to Jimmy. I understand their feelings towards me. […] I can only imagine the pain I felt, ”wrote Sébastien Varin in a letter delivered to the judge, pleading guilty at the Saint-Jérôme courthouse.
The now 41-year-old man was driving at very high speed on October 26, 2018 in Sainte-Marguerite-du-Lac-Masson, when he badly negotiated a curve and struck several trees.
The death of Jimmy Accurso was unfortunately noted on the spot, seriously injured by the impacts.
That evening, the two longtime friends had consumed alcohol at a dinner and a reception, he was told in court.
“I am well aware of how lucky I am to be alive today, and that I could have died that day”, underlined Mr. Varin in his letter, saying since to have “radically changed” his way of life.

“I take full responsibility for my crime and above all, be assured of my sincere regrets,” the accused also told Judge Marc-André Dagenais.
The accused was very emotional when he made his way to the cells, after being sentenced to three years in detention, following a common suggestion.
As of today, he will also be banned from driving a motor vehicle for the next 42 months.
