The Public Health Commission has approved this Tuesday the third dose of the vaccine against COVID-19 for everyone over the age of 70 once six months have passed since the second dose. These vaccines will be administered starting October 25.
The third dose to the elderly will be parallel to the flu vaccination campaign. The punctures will begin with the population older than 70 years and will later be opened to those older than 65 once six months have also passed since their second dose.
The proposal to expand the target group, made up of immunosuppressed and elderly people in residences, has been led by the autonomous regions of Castilla La Mancha and Andalusia. The fundamental argument that supports this decision is the severity of the disease as the infected gets older, so that third dose has been established after 70 years.
The extension of the age range to people over 70 will not be extended -for the moment- to the rest of the population, as agreed by the European Medicines Agency, as it is not deemed necessary.
However, the decision to apply the third dose was not taken unanimously. In the deliberate vote for Public Health there have been 12 votes in favor, five abstentions and two votes against: those of the Community of Madrid and Galicia.
