The New York City Marathon returns this fall for its 50th anniversary, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Monday.
The 2021 New York Marathon at 60% of its capacity
The marathon to be held on November 7 will welcome 33,000 runners, or about 60% of its usual number of participants. 2019 had been a record year with more than 53,000 runners. Registration begins June 8 and health and safety guidelines may be subject to change, depending on data that emerges, including from the CDC, by the day of the marathon.

Sanitary measures in force during this marathon
The New York Road Runners Club, which oversees the race, has contacted those who initially registered for the 2020 marathon, which was canceled due to the Covid, guaranteeing them a place for the 2021 edition.
According to Governor Cuomo’s office, health measures will be in effect for this 2021 marathon: staggered start times between runners according to pace; appropriate social distancing at all times, including before and after the race; masks mandatory at all times for event staff and volunteers; Mandatory health screening of attendees, event staff and volunteers, which may include proof of full immunization status or recent negative result.
If the borders remain closed to international visitors, this 2021 New York marathon could be a race reserved for runners living in the United States or being nationals of a country not covered by the current travel ban.
