Facebook, Messenger and WhatsApp crash (updated) – Technology

The social network “Facebook”, as well as the chats “WhatsApp” and “Messenger” collapsed in Bulgaria and elsewhere in the world. The Instagram photo-sharing app is also affected.

The platforms managed by Facebook stopped working around 7 pm Bulgarian time.

On Twitter, Facebook said it knew about the problem, was working to restore functionality, and apologized to users.

The cause of the problem and its scope are currently unknown.

Interruptions in access to the company’s websites have been reported from various parts of the world, which is why the first comments are that this is not a regional problem, but a central one. At the same time, users of Twitter, Telegram, TikTok and other social networks report difficulties, but it seems that the reason is different – an influx of registrants, while “Facebook” normalizes its work.

One version is that there is a crash in almost all of Facebook’s servers, which probably points to a serious problem – for example with the power supply – of the data center on which they operate. If so, it should be quickly switched to backup sources or other operations centers to distribute their work. But end users will have to wait for everything to return to normal.

Such crashes are not uncommon for the largest social media company – there was one about half a year ago – but they are usually local, not global.

Roters points out that typing an error when trying to reach the site suggests a problem with the Domain Name System. A similar case occurred in July, when the shutdown of cloud services company Akamai Technologies made it impossible for users to access the pages they wrote. Security experts quoted by the agency say the root cause may be a misconfiguration resulting from an internal error, although it is theoretically acceptable to be sabotage by an “insider.”

It is almost unbelievable to be a hacker attack, because an effective strike on such a large corporation requires a particularly large resource and complex coordination of several centers. The crash happened between the revelations of a former employee of “Facebook” for the fact that the company pursues a policy in favor of its profits, rather than clearing the platform of hatred and misinformation. The same employee will testify in a few hours in a subcommittee of the US Senate.

Meanwhile, shares of Facebook fell by almost 6% and dragged down 2.13% of the NASDAQ index.
