The left lanes on the Haringvliet Bridge have been widened by forty centimeters in both directions. This means that the overtaking lanes are now 2.35 meters after an earlier narrowing.
Rijkswaterstaat took various measures last summer because the bridge is in poor condition. To prevent clamps and road plates from coming loose due to the vibrations of the heavy traffic, two lanes were narrowed and the maximum speed was reduced from 100 to 50 kilometers per hour.
Many motorists complained about the 1.95 meter lanes. Overtaking was therefore difficult, especially when a truck had to be passed.

Now space has been cleared in the median strip by replacing mobile speed cameras with enforcement cameras. As a result, the left lane could be widened in both directions.
Motorists are happy with the changes. “It worked at first, but it was fitting and measuring,” a motorist told the regional channel. Rijnmond. “People who were a bit more scared can now drive on more easily.”
Two narrow lanes
Due to the poor condition of the bridge, only one lane would initially remain open in both directions, but that plan encountered a lot of resistance. It was subsequently decided not to allow traffic in both directions to drive over one lane, but over two narrowed lanes of 1.95 meters.
The left lanes are therefore forty centimeters wider from today. The adjusted situation on the bridge will remain this way until 2023, when the renovation of the bridge is scheduled.
Bridge open more often
Shipping is also affected by the poor condition of the bridge. The movable part of the Haringvliet bridge, which must be able to open for higher ships, is in bad shape. As a result, the bridge would only open once a week for the next two years. A spokesperson for Rijkswaterstaat tells Rijnmond that the bridge will open on Friday and Sunday from this week because significantly fewer bolts are coming loose.
