Vooruit chairman Rousseau wants to take measures as soon as possible

Forward chairman Conner Rousseau wants the federal government to take measures as soon as possible to slow down the increase in our energy bill. He said that on Radio 1. According to government sources, possible measures would only take effect from January 1, but Rousseau thinks that is too late.

Energy bills have been rising very fast lately. Various parties are looking for ways to soften that bitter pill: for example, a possible reduction of the taxes on those invoices is being looked at as a mitigating measure.

But it is too late for these or other measures to come into effect from 1 January next year. “It’s not that easy to change that with a snap of the finger, but it shouldn’t be until January,” he told Radio 1 on Saturday morning. “The bill must be brought down as soon as possible.”

According to Rousseau, the social rate is also being extended and expanded, “but the energy crisis is broader than just who is eligible for such a social rate”. “Many working families also waive the energy bill, which is multiplied by two or three. If you lower excise duties, that is for everyone who pays excise duties.”

The federal government will meet this weekend in conclave to put together the budget, but the energy file would also be on the table on Saturday.
