Eleven new building projects in the Freiburg area receive architecture award – Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district

A wine warehouse in the Kaiserstuhl, a holiday home in the Black Forest, a staircase in Freiburg: the Association of German Architects has awarded buildings in the region. A critical classification.

The award of architecture prizes usually offers a good opportunity to take a critical look at the recent new buildings in a region. This also applies to the Hugo Häring Prize, which the Association of German Architects awards every three years in a two-stage process. For the Freiburg region and its district group, this competition, dated 2020, took place one year late due to the pandemic.
The woodshed stands next to a farm on a lonely Black Forest height near Lenzkirch. From the outside it looks almost unchanged. But inside it offers the luxury of a holiday apartment according to the latest standard in the smallest of spaces. The Stuttgart architect Martin Ohlf has built for himself and his wife an idyll – somewhat teasingly called “chalette” – that combines ecological standards with sophisticated enjoyment of life.
