With Bob Mendes (93) we lost one of our most important crime authors this weekend. He may not have been the best stylist and sometimes dared to fill up more pages than were really necessary, but he was the undisputed founder of the Flemish faction thriller. A subgenre in which tension and true facts went hand in hand: from hooliganism to geopolitics to international terrorism. But above all, Bob Mendes was a true gentleman who did everything he could to give his fellow crime authors a better place under the sun.
