Frohar Shayan (24) made himself small when the Taliban soldier approached the car at the roadblock. Would she be exposed? Arrested? Tortured?
And she who was so close to the finish line. Freedom. The plane that was to take her to Norway.
– Where are you going?
The soldier was brusque. He looked suspiciously into the car at Frohar and his family. Frohar had hidden her face behind a full veil so that only her eyes were visible. She had burned all the documents that could reveal her before they left Kabul.
– We are only going on a family trip to Jalalabad, her father replied as calmly as he could.
What he did not say was that they should not stop in that city. They had intended to move further east. To the border at the Khyber Pass. And into Pakistan.
Frohar knew that the family was guaranteed a stay in Norway as soon as they got out of Afghanistan.
But first they had to get out.
