Brazilian protesters demand Bolsonaro leave

Tens of thousands of protesters in several Brazilian cities have demanded the departure of President Bolsonaro. They are not happy with the government’s corona policy and want an impeachment procedure to be started. More than 600,000 people in Brazil have died from Covid-19. The protesters also want high inflation and gas prices to be tackled.

The demonstrations were organized by opposition parties and trade unions. In exactly one year’s election, Bolsonaro’s popularity in the polls has bottomed out. Recently, he was 9 percentage points behind his rival and former president Lula.

Under the microscope at the Supreme Court

Although his popularity is declining, Bolsonaro continues to attract a lot of crowds. Last month, tens of thousands of his supporters took to the streets to express their support. They planned to surround the Supreme Court, but they failed.

The court had launched an investigation into possible anti-democratic activities and the spreading of false information by supporters of Bolsonaro. The president called it “unconstitutional” and a violation of free speech. He previously claimed that fraud will be committed in the elections next year.
