THE TURNOVER OF AIRLINE COMPANIES DEGRINGOUS
Despite a global vaccination campaign and the reopening of many borders, air traffic was down nearly 69% last August, compared to the same month of 2019, according to the latest figures from the International Association of air transport (Iata), broadcast this Thursday.
Air travel within countries or large coherent geographical areas (United States, EU, China, Russia) fell less markedly, by some 32%, but was running out of steam compared to the beginning of summer 2021 , the Delta variant having led some countries to tighten the constraints.
Thus, many companies remain in deficit while 2020 was, according to Iata, “the worst” year in the history of the sector, with a 60% drop in passenger numbers to 1.8 billion passengers (compared to 4 , 5 billion in 2019), which the strong demand for freight did not make it possible to compensate.
The 77th annual general meeting of Iata will be held over three days in Boston (United States) to alleviate the difficulties caused by the Covid-19.
