Wolfsburg – After Joe Scally’s redeeming goal in stoppage time, the Gladbach professionals celebrated their 18-year-old US boy exuberantly. Because the Borussia had to wait almost 18 years for this moment.
After 16 unsuccessful attempts, Borussia vom Niederrhein managed to win again at VfL Wolfsburg.
Coach Adi Hütter’s team won the Champions League team 3-1 (2-1) and continued their upward trend in the Bundesliga after the 1-0 win against Dortmund a week earlier. For Wolfsburg, on the other hand, it was the second league defeat in a row.
Mönchengladbach wins at the feared opponent
«That is really good. We won against two top teams, »said the strong Jonas Hofmann after the turbulent game. In front of 12,845 spectators, Breel Embolo (5th minute), Hofmann (7th minute) and Scally (90th + 5) scored the goals for the guests. Luca Waldschmidt only managed the interim connection goal for the hosts (24th).
In the closing stages, Wolfsburg defender Maxence Lacroix saw yellow-red (76th). Referee Frank Willenborg withdrew another dismissal for Jerome Roussillon after he had looked at the scene again on the monitor (82nd). Lars Stindl missed a penalty for the guests (78th). «I think we saw a very interesting and also high-class Bundesliga game in which everything was possible. The bottom line is that we deserved to win, ”said Gladbach’s coach Hütter.
The outstanding player in the Gladbach team was Embolo. The Swiss national player was involved everywhere and in almost every important scene. «He has the body, the speed and the overview. And today he brought all of these virtues to the field », Hofmann praised his strong offensive colleague.
Embolo hits an overhead kick
The Gladbachers got off to a dream start. Borussia took the lead in the fifth minute. Hofmann served Denis Zakaria on the sixteenth, the Swiss shot became a template for Embolo, who used it with a wonderful overhead kick.
Only two minutes later the Gladbachers were back on the spot. After a nice pass from Embolo, Hofmann turned Wolfsburg’s goalkeeper Koen Casteels and pushed into the empty goal. “It’s very simple, we give the game away in the first few minutes. Then we run after it, ”said Wolfsburg coach Mark van Bommel.
The Dutchman had changed his team to two positions compared to the 1-1 draw against FC Sevilla in the Champions League and brought Waldschmidt, among others. And the offensive player, who came from Lisbon in the summer, reduced the game to 1: 2 in the 24th minute, bringing Wolfsburg back into the game. It was his first goal in the VfL jersey.
However, Gladbach remained the better team, but failed to make the decision earlier with the third goal. Among other things, Stindl failed with a weak penalty shot by Wolfsburg goalkeeper Casteels. Only Scally released the guests and made the first Gladbach victory in Wolfsburg since November 2003 perfect.
