Mimika Health Office socializes malaria prevention to Papua PON reporters

Mimika (ANTARA) – The Mimika District Health Office disseminated prevention and precautions against malaria to journalists covering the XX Papua National Sports Week (PON) in Mimika, Saturday.

Mimika Health Office officers visited the ANTARA journalist’s accommodation in charge of covering the Papua PON in Mimika to conduct counseling.

Imelda Krisanta as the Malaria handling officer at the Mimika Health Office explained the ins and outs of malaria, its symptoms, methods of prevention, and treatment.

The socialization or counseling was carried out, considering that Mimika is an endemic area of the disease transmitted by the Anopheles mosquito.

“The common symptoms of malaria include fever, headache, vomiting, diarrhea. However, the more we come here, the less symptomatic,” he said.

Therefore, he said, blood tests are usually immediately carried out in the laboratory to confirm it.

In fact, on that occasion a blood test was also carried out which the results stated that all journalists were negative for malaria.

According to him, the entire PON contingent has also received socialization, malaria tests, and monitoring for up to three months after returning to their respective regions.

“We have data on the PON contingent. So, the entire PON contingent has been (socialized). However, if outside the contingent reports, for example reporting journalists, we are ready to serve,” said Reynold.

Meanwhile, one of the journalists from LKBN ANTARA Fathur Rochman admitted that he understood malaria more through the counseling, including its prevention measures.

“With this socialization, I can anticipate the transmission of malaria and know the steps to handle if exposed to the disease,” he said.

PON Papua will take place on October 2-15 2021 by competing in 37 sports which are divided into four regions, namely Jayapura City, Jayapura Regency, Mimika, and Merauke.

Although it was only officially opened on Saturday night, there are several sports that have started competitions and medals.
