Knowing Toxic Positivity and How to Avoid It

Here are some ways to avoid toxic positivity which arises because of coercion from within oneself:

1. Recognizing negative emotions as normal and an important part of the human experience

2. Identify emotions instead of trying to avoid them

3. Talk to a trusted person about emotions, including negative feelings

4. Seek support from non-judgmental people, such as a trusted parent or friend.

Furthermore, here are some ways to avoid toxic positivity on others:

1. Encourage people to talk openly about their emotions

2. Comfortable with negative emotions

3. Avoid giving a positive response to everything someone says

4. Realize that intense negative emotions often coincide with strong positive emotions, such as when you are deeply sad.

Think positive yields some benefits, but in reality no one can think positively all the time. Temporary, toxic positivity forcing a person to express only positive emotions can hinder their ability to communicate and make them feel bad about themselves for having negative thoughts.
