UK study: COVID, flu vaccine safe to be injected together

LONDON (ANTARA) – The COVID-19 vaccine and flu vaccine are safe to be injected together because they do not have a negative impact on the immune response produced by both, according to research in the UK on Thursday (30/9).

Britain and the rest of the Northern Hemisphere are getting ready for winter.

A spike in flu cases is expected as COVID-19 restrictions are relaxed and social distancing rules are eased.

Injection booster (boost) against COVID-19 is being provided in the UK to the elderly, vulnerable and health care workers.

Meanwhile, the government of Prime Minister Boris Johnson also promised this year to score the success of the flu vaccination program, the largest in its history.

The study, led by the University of Bristol, found that reported side effects were usually mild to moderate in testing with three flu vaccines and Pfizer or AstraZeneca COVID-19 shots.

The results of the study have been presented to the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization (JCVI) for consideration and to assist policy makers in planning the future of vaccination programmes.

The vaccine dose is given on the same day, in a different arm.

During the study period, one group received an injection of the COVID-19 vaccine and flu vaccine at the first visit, while a placebo was given at the second visit.

The other group got a COVID-19 shot and a placebo on the same day, followed by a flu vaccine on the second day.

The study found 97 percent of participants said they would be willing to receive future doses of the COVID-19 and flu vaccines.

The study involved 679 volunteers at 12 sites across England and Wales. The full results will be published in the Lancet, the journal of medicine.
