The US Congress has approved a temporary budget

In addition to extending government funding, the proposal also provides assistance for areas hit hard by this year’s hurricane season, fires and other natural disasters. It also contains measures to help refugees from Afghanistan, which the US has accepted by tens of thousands after the withdrawal of troops from the country.

The United States is dealing with the budget at the last minute due to a dispute between Democrats and Republicans over increasing the country’s debt. The United States currently has the highest legal amount that it can owe. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned that if the restriction was not lifted, the United States would no longer be able to repay its national debt around October 18. This would be an unprecedented situation that would cause shocks to the US and world economies.

Democrats in the Senate initially linked the vote to extend the federal budget to the vote on the debt limit, but Republicans did not loudly agree. Senate chief Democrat Chuck Schumer eventually proposed an extension of federal funding on its own, and a number of Republicans supported the proposal.

The budget law was subsequently voted on by the House of Representatives, which, as expected, approved it by a comfortable majority.

The lower congress chamber is also holding closely watched talks on Thursday on an infrastructure investment package worth about one trillion dollars (21.9 trillion crowns), which was recently agreed by Republicans and Democrats. However, some Democrats do not want to support the proposal until Congress approves an even larger investment package of $ 3.5 trillion (76.7 trillion crowns).

However, two Democratic senators, Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin, who have a de facto veto over the distribution of power in the upper house of Congress, disagree with similarly high government spending. According to the Politico server, Manchin declares that he is willing to raise his hand for expenditures in the maximum amount of 1.5 trillion dollars (32.8 trillion crowns). However, some supporters of the party’s leftist wing have previously demanded investments of up to six trillion dollars (131.3 trillion crowns) and already consider the current proposal of 3.5 trillion to be compromise.

According to Reuters sources, Biden and his advisers are now trying to find out how much spending democratic lawmakers could really agree on. The president canceled his planned trip to Chicago due to negotiations and negotiated with some members of Congress at the White House, but his efforts have so far failed.

There is a lot at stake for Biden. Its popularity among Americans is rapidly declining, helped by the chaotic withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, the economic difficulties of recent months, and ongoing concerns about the spread of coronavirus. Biden’s economic plan, which includes investments in health care, education and the fight against climate change, is seen as a key element of his presidency. Democrats also hope public investment will help them win next year’s congressional elections.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has repeatedly said on Thursday that a vote on the infrastructure package agreed with the Republicans will take place. However, Steny Hoyer, the head of the Democratic majority, told reporters that he was not sure whether the package would pass the lower house of congress.

“This is how democracy works,” White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki told a news briefing on Thursday. “I know it seems foreign, as she hasn’t been here much in the last few years,” she added, citing Republican Donald Trump’s past administration. “We are working to win the vote tonight. We still have a few hours to do so,” she said.
