According to CEZ, the planned Czech factory for batteries for electric cars, the so-called gigafactory, could produce batteries with a capacity of more than 30 gigawatt-hours, which is enough for 400,000 to 800,000 cars a year.

“It is the case that we have been negotiating with Škoda Auto from the Volkswagen Group for almost the whole year, but it is still premature to comment on the final agreement, because we have not yet made one,” said Beneš, adding that negotiations continue with other partners, mostly from Asia.

At the end of July, Deputy Prime Minister Karel Havlíček (for YES) and the director of ČEZ signed a memorandum on support for the planned project of a battery factory in the Czech Republic.

According to earlier information, the investment in the first phase should amount to at least 52 billion crowns, and in connection with it, the creation of at least 2,300 new jobs is expected. The favorite for the construction is the area of the former brown coal power plant Prunéřov 1, which ČEZ shut down last year.

Lithium is used in the manufacture of batteries. Three percent of the world’s known lithium reserves are in Cínovec in the Ore Mountains. CEZ wants to make a decision on the commercial use of lithium in 2023. The current plan of Geomet’s lithium mining project, in which CEZ has a majority stake, envisages the start of mining in 2025.
