What is a citizens’ initiative?
For a citizens’ initiative you need at least 40,000 signatures from people who support you. Including their name, address and date of birth, as it must be verifiable. In addition, the subject you want to put on the agenda may not have already been discussed in the House of Representatives in the past two years.
Today, the House spoke, from left to right, with great respect about Natalie Kramer’s citizens’ initiative on fibromyalgia. “Without you, we would not have talked about it today,” said Minister De Jonge, who promised to work to raise awareness about the disease that at least 340,000 people suffer from.
D66 MP Van Beukering called citizens’ initiatives “the core of our democracy”. She thinks it is very important that the Dutch can raise issues “which are not discussed enough here.”
