Minister of Communication and Information Announces Complete Refarming of 2.3GHz Frequency Band

Previously, the Ministry of Communication and Information would rearrange/refarming 2.3 GHz radio frequency spectrum in 9 clusters. According to the Minister of Communication and Informatics, Johnny G. Plate, the rearrangement of frequency bands is aimed at improving the quality of digital connectivity through cellular services, by allocating the use of frequency spectrum efficiently.

“Refarming 2.3 GHz radio frequency band is planned to take place nationwide. The first step will start on July 14, 2021 and will be completed by September 2021 at the latest,” Johnny said, quoted from the official statement from the Ministry of Communication and Information, Wednesday (14/7/2021).

Johnny says, refarming the frequency spectrum will be carried out in 9 clusters that have been agreed upon by the users of this frequency band, namely Telkomsel and Smartfren. Both are winners of the auction for the 2.3 GHz frequency band some time ago.

In addition to the two cellular operators above, the 2.3 GHz frequency reset also involves PT Berca Hardayaperkasa as the operator of a packet switched local fixed network (BWA operator). Berca is also a user of this frequency band.

The first cluster to be reorganized is the Riau Islands region, which is planned to be completed no later than September 2021 in a cluster covering the East Java region.

Refarming This frequency spectrum is carried out to enable the deployment of 5G services with better quality, while at the same time supporting the optimal use of 4G.

“There are many advantages and benefits for the community who use cellular services, especially related to improving the quality of services that can be enjoyed by customers, both 4G and 5G services,” he said.

Improvements in service quality may occur due to the optimization of the use of the radio spectrum. With the optimization, the capacity of the cellular network will also increase so as to be able to balance the growth of data traffic that continues to grow, including in congested areas.

For your information, the government implements a neutral technology policy to deploy cellular services, including on the 2.3 GHz frequency. He hopes that neutral technology can make it easier for operators to choose the technology to be implemented.
