Corona consequences for students: What the school principals are demanding | NDR.de – news

The investigation had shown that children and young people in Hamburg probably suffered particularly badly from the Corona crisis – more than in a nationwide comparison. On Tuesday, the Association of Heads of Hamburg High Schools and Study Seminars (VLHGS) discussed the consequences in an online conference with scientists.

Concerts, sports and school trips

“We have to ask what each individual student needs now,” said Christian Gefert from the Association of High School Heads of School. It should not primarily be about missed learning material. Now activities are needed that strengthen children and young people – that is, school concerts, sports and also class trips.

Practical problems make school trips difficult

However, there are currently many problems with the school trips. The school directors ‘association believes that the school authorities’ requirements have led to great uncertainty. In part, the specifications are unrealistic. For example, students would have to put on their masks when they get up in the morning. Because of the Corona requirements, some schools would prefer not to travel. Classes would have to become class communities again.

The VLHGS believes that teaching has to be developed further, and that requires time and broad discussion in schools. “Peace in the box”, as politicians would like to see, is not appropriate now.

UKE study: More psychosomatic consequences in Hamburg

In parallel to a Germany-wide survey of 11 to 17-year-olds, the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf also asked more than 1,000 young people from Hamburg about their experiences in the first corona wave. Children and adolescents from the Hanseatic city reported psychosomatic complaints such as difficulty falling asleep, irritability and back pain or headaches, sometimes even daily, more than the average in the whole of Germany.
