At Hemiksem station, a skirmish between two young men broke out last night. Things got out of hand, and one of the two men lashed out with a knife. The victim received one or more stabs. Emergency services were quickly on the scene, but all help came too late.
The suspect was arrested in the vicinity shortly after the facts and was subsequently interrogated. According to bystanders, the suspect lives nearby.
It is still unclear what led to the stabbing. It is possible that the two had gotten into an argument at a skate square nearby. That’s what bystanders say.
The man was interrogated by the police during the night and will be arraigned on Wednesday before the investigating judge in Antwerp. The suspect is charged with murder,” said Lieselotte Claessens of the Antwerp public prosecutor’s office. “The reason or motive of the stabbing is still unclear for the time being and is of course part of the further investigation.”
It is currently unclear whether the two knew each other. They both lived in Hemiksem and not far from the station. Investigating judge Ilse Caes, the prosecutor’s office, the lab and a law doctor dropped off at the scene of the facts on Tuesday evening.
