Trick around: Half a million disappeared

According to the agreement between the Danish artist Jans Haaning and the museum Kunsten in Aalborg, the artwork of the former was to consist of two glass frames with many banknotes. But when the staff at the art museum Kunsten in Aalborg opened the packages from the artist Jens Haaning two days ago, something was missing: half a million kroner.

The money the museum had lent the artist, and they were to be part of the work, writes DR.

Instead, he had created a new work entitled: “Take the Money And Run”. For that was exactly what the artist did; took the money and ran.

Half a million

– The work is that half a million is missing, said Jens Haaning when he was in Danish P1 Morgen to explain himself.

According to Haaning, the exact amount is 534,000 Danish kroner, which he has borrowed from the art museum to restore two of his previous works. According to the agreement, the money must be returned when the exhibition ends. But it will not happen, says Jens Haaning.

– No it does not. The pain is that I have taken their money, he says.

Haaning believes the work is a protest against the salary the museum offered him for the artwork.

– No theft

Lasse Andersson, director at Kunsten in Aalborg, insists on getting back the money that the museum has lent to the artist.

– No, he should not have the money, because it was not part of the agreement, says Lasse Andersson to Dagbladet.

For the time being, the director will not comment on whether he should report Jens Haaning to the police if the money is not returned when the exhibition ends on 14 January 2022. Andersson rejects that Kunsten i Aalborg has not offered Haaning a fair payment.

– Jens gets a viewing fee, which we apply for from the state, he gets 10,000 kroner according to the contract, and then we cover expenses up to 6,000 euros, he says.

Jens Hanning says that the money will not be returned, but denies that it is a case of theft.

– No, it’s not theft. It is a breach of contract, and breach of contract is part of the work, he says to DR.
