The incumbent District Administrator Oliver Quilling (CDU) narrowly missed the election victory in the first round on Sunday. According to the preliminary final result of the district council election for the Offenbach district, Quilling is well ahead of the opponents of the SPD and the Greens with 49.58 percent of the vote. But since it wasn’t quite enough for an absolute majority, he’ll have to run for the runoff again in two weeks’ time.

The opposing candidate in the second round of elections is social affairs department and treasurer Carsten Müller (SPD), who made it into second place with 27.58 percent of the vote, a clear margin from Quilling. Quilling and Müller have been working closely together for several years. The “election campaign” was correspondingly harmonious.

No longer in the race is Robert Müller (Greens), who won 22.84 percent of the votes. The turnout was 66.94 percent, just under four percent of the votes cast were invalid. 265,697 people were eligible to vote. Six years ago, Quilling was clearly confirmed in office in the first round with 59.2 percent of the vote. He had to give up this time.

Exactly the same candidates ran at the time. At the time, 27.6 percent of the voters voted for Carsten Müller and 13.2 percent for Robert Müller. While the SPD candidate stagnated, the challenger of the Greens, Robert Müller, was able to make up a lot of ground in this election. The 54-year-old industrial engineer gained almost ten percentage points; nevertheless it was not enough.

In the district election six years ago, the turnout was only 28.7 percent. The fact that it was now more than twice as high is likely to be related to the fact that the federal election took place on the same day.
