At home Mercedes is alarming for the reliability of PUs. Bottas’ 4th is in fact “gone”, something unexpected as declared by Toto Wolff to Motorsport: “We are currently re-evaluating the performance of the power units because question marks have arisen. We need to be sure that we have the right balance, and not just for this year, but also thinking about 2022. It is a time when we have to assess the situation, it is always a question of balancing reliability and performance, a fine line that you have to identify very well. If a retirement arrives it could mean the end of the games for the World title, but a weekend at zero point is a scenario that no one can afford, neither us nor our opponents ”.
Alarm confirmed by Bottas: “The engine we disassembled, the Monza one, is gone. In the Italian Grand Prix everything worked perfectly, but the problems emerged here in Sochi as early as Friday. In view of the next races I have the power unit mounted this weekend before the race and a very old one at my disposal ”.
