Freiburg (dpa) – It was the really big farewell show – and Christian Streich right in the middle. After the glamorous 3-0 (3-0) of SC Freiburg in the last Bundesliga game of its professional footballers in the venerable Dreisamstadion, the party really got going. As a lead singer, Streich started the Humba chants with a megaphone in the fan block, his protégés did an extensive lap of honor, a compilation of goals from the past was shown on the video walls and thousands of cell phone lights went on in the stands as the musical ones from the speakers Evergreen “You’ll Never Walk Alone” rang out.
“Basically, I don’t belong in the curve. The players are the ones that the spectators come for,” said Streich, but “too many people would have been disappointed if I hadn’t gone.” So he went there – with tears – after all. “I’m happy that we won and that the people were happy,” added the coach after he had regrouped a few minutes later. “Now it’s good again, now it’s over,” he emphasized. “Now something new is going on again.” The Freiburg team will be playing their next home game against RB Leipzig on October 16 in the new Europa-Park Stadium.
360 Bundesliga games have now taken place in the Dreisamstadion, 999 goals have been scored. The 1000th was narrowly missed by the SC after goals from Lukas Kübler (6th minute), Lucas Höler (25th) and Vincenzo Grifo (34th, hand penalty) on Sunday. But the people of Baden should also take with them momentum from this farewell break. They are fifth in the table – and still unbeaten after six match days. This has never happened in their Bundesliga history.
However, Streich will not take off. “I know and know where we belong,” said the 56-year-old when asked about his team’s twelve points and just four goals conceded. “There are good phases and the other phases will come.” When moving to the new arena in the Brühl district, which can hold almost 35,000 spectators, “whether we take humility with us” will be decisive. “To continue to stand together and live this spirit will be the great task,” emphasized Streich. After 67 years with great gestures, feelings and stories in an extraordinary stadium.
