In the city of Zurich there are no further restrictions for building near the lake. Those eligible to vote rejected the tanning initiative with 57.8 percent of the votes against. This wanted to protect the green areas on the lakeshore from the shadows cast by major projects.
A majority of 71,209 voters said no to the move, 52,013 said yes. The turnout was 55.1 percent.
The initiators wanted to prevent new buildings that cast shadows on public green spaces. They see the precious recreation area threatened by large building projects and therefore demanded a limitation of the maximum building height according to the current building stock. The municipal code should be changed accordingly.
City council and the majority of the local council had rejected the initiative. They feared that the initiative would lead to uncertainty and litigation. The building options on the lakeshore are already severely restricted by the building and zoning regulations, so another argument against the move.
Construction projects that have already been approved, such as the development on the Franz Garage area, could no longer have been prevented by the initiative. Nor would it have any direct influence on the cable car, which Zürcher Kantonalbank had planned for its 150th anniversary, because the canton is not responsible for this project.
New building for medical and fire services
A large majority votes in favor of the new Wache Nord building
With a large majority, however, the voters said yes to the second proposal from the city of Zurich, the new building of the North Guard for the 24-hour operation of the fire and rescue services. In addition, the central operational logistics with the material management of Protection & Rescue is housed there. The militia and professional fire brigade can work together even more closely.
The proportion of votes in favor was 91.8 percent. 116,215 voters spoke out in favor of the loan, only 10,403 rejected it.
The voters approved a property loan of 107 million francs for the construction at Binzmühlenstrasse 156 in Oerlikon. 6.7 million francs of this are earmarked for the remediation of contaminated sites on the building site and demolition work.
