The legal battle of the European Commission to standardize a universal charging port for mobiles, tablets and other devices, is still ongoing, and it seems that the winds are blowing in favor of it, since the proposal has already been approved by the majority and is now the turn of the European Parliament and Council to decide. Whatever the result, the truth is that the European Commission postulates the USB type C standard as the unified charging port on mobile devices. Seeing how widespread USB C is, we wouldn’t be surprised if this vision materializes. However, there are other aspects of the proposal that are worth knowing.
USB C, one port to rule them all
The European Commission’s approach also pursues the harmonization of loading port and fast charging technology; which means that it will be guaranteed that this technology is not limited by the manufacturers, so that any device can be charged at the same speed even using a charger from another brand. The minimum power in this case would be 25 watts, it should be added.
Another important point is the sold separately from chargers; a measure that gives the reason to Apple in selling its mobiles without including the charger. If this legislation is passed, each manufacturer will be able to choose whether or not to include a charger with the purchase of the device, although yes, the cable will have to be supplied as mandatory. Considering that manufacturers such as Samsung and Xiaomi have also adopted similar measures, we would not be surprised if this is made the case regardless of the outcome of the legislation.
If this legislation is passed, USB C will become the common denominator to charge mobile devices and manufacturers will have a grace period of 2 years to adapt to the the rest requirements explained in this writing.
Finally, it should be noted that the European Commission does not do this on a whim or for the convenience of users, but rather in order to reduce the volume of electronic waste generated by each household.
According to a portavoice of this organism, “It is estimated that the reduction of the production and elimination of new chargers will reduce the amount of electronic waste by almost a thousand tons per year.” As you will see, this measure is taken with the environment and sustainable development in mind, so we can empathize with the European Union, even if we do not agree with the whole proposal.
