The 29-year-old granddaughter of Emperor Akihito announced her engagement to her former college classmate, Kei Komuro, in 2017.

However, the marriage was postponed after reports of financial problems between Komuro’s mother and her ex-fiancé.

“The Japanese government will agree that the princess pays up to 150 million yen ($1.35 million) for royalty who gave up their status in order to marry a commoner, amid public criticism of her fiancé,” public broadcaster NHK and other media said.
