Four in one year: will a wave of coups break again in peaceful Africa

A coup d’état failed in Sudan on Tuesday dawn. It was the fourth military change of power in an African country in the last year. These statistics are of concern even to the African Union. The continents, once shaken by coups, have seen them less and less in the last twenty years, and there is every reason to talk about the maturing of national democratic institutions. Now, Africa is in danger of losing the stability it has achieved over the last two decades.

Bubbling of sub-Saharan Africa

The coup attempt at the beginning of September took place in Sudan, a country where the wave caused by the coup a year and a half ago has not yet subsided. Moreover, if you can believe the representatives of the Transitional Council, the new coup was carried out by the supporters of the Islamic conservative regime of Omar al-Bashir, who was overthrown in April 2019, blocking roads and ports in several cities, Al Jazeera reported. About 40 people linked to both the army and the civilian service have been detained.

A much more successful coup took place less than a month ago in another African Muslim country. Cars full of armed men arrived in the central Kaluma district of Conakry, Guinea’s two million-strong capital, on Sunday morning, September 5.
