The Swedish attacking talent Anthony Elanga, 19, was the man of the headlines when Manchester United’s U23 team faced Everton on Friday night – for both positive and negative reasons.
Elanga opened the scoring after just three minutes of play when he put the ball in the net from close range. United also won the match 1-0.
In the final minutes, Elanga started a big fight when he handed out both one and two pushes on Everton player Charlie Whittaker out at the sideline. Whittaker responded by throwing the ball towards Elanga, which made the Swede really angry and jumped on Whittaker. The situation degenerated when several players went into the events to support their respective teammates.
Elanga was one of three players sent off in connection with the situation. Whittaker was also shown the red card.
Anthony Elanga, who can play both outside and center forward, made his A-team debut for Manchester United this spring and nodded in a goal in the final league round against Wolverhampton. On Wednesday, he jumped into the league cup match against West Ham during the last quarter.
Elanga has also shown the front feet in the Swedish U21 national team with four goals in four matches.
