Volvo will stop using leather indoors

Volvo links its decision to a commitment to make 25% of new Volvo materials recycled or biodegradable by 2025.

According to its representatives, the skin that the carmaker is getting rid of due to climate protection and CO2 emissions produced by cattle will be replaced, for example, by textile materials from recycled PET bottles or biomaterials from sustainable Swedish and Finnish forestry.

Recycled cork, which was originally used in the wine industry, is also to be a new material widely used in interiors.

“If we want to be a progressive car manufacturer, we need to address all issues of sustainability, not just CO2 emissions,” said Stuart Templar, Director of Global Sustainability at Volvo Cars.

“An important part of this work is the responsible use of resources, which includes considerate treatment of animals. The introduction of leather-free interiors for our purely electric cars is a sensible step towards solving this problem, “he said.

Although such a drastic step is not common in the automotive industry, many car manufacturers already offer recycled “premium” substances as an alternative. For example, the Jaguar Land Rover.
