Freiburg (AP) – During the first Bundesliga game of SC Freiburg in the Dreisamstadion in August 1993 against Wattenscheid 09, Volker Finke sat as coach on the sidelines, at the last Sunday (5.30 p.m. / DAZN) against FC Augsburg he will be the guest of honor on the Be the grandstand. “It gets emotional, but the nice thing is that you don’t have to say goodbye because luckily people continue to play there,” the 73-year-old told the German press agency. The second team and the women of the sports club will play their soccer games in the Dreisamstadion after the Bundesliga team has moved.
Finke cites his first game against 1860 Munich, the last against Koblenz and above all the home games against Bayern Munich as the fondest memories of the venerable venue. “The fact that we always won them in the first three years was very special,” said Finke, “and I also remember the sparkler game in December 1993 against Dortmund, which we won 4-1, when it was unbelievable good atmosphere”. Finke was Freiburg’s coach from 1991 to 2007 and is happy to “see the club’s development”. He is also expected to be present at the opening of the new Europa-Park Stadium on October 7th.
