This year the Laver Cup will take place from September 24th to 26th in Boston (USA). The big absentee is co-organizer Roger Federer, who cannot participate due to injury. Nevertheless, he does not stay completely away from the tournament.
“I pull myself into tennis all day,” said Federer in an interview. It is of course painful that he cannot take part this year. He had known that at some point he would not be able to be there, but this year he was in good spirits. «I fought for my comeback for a long time, which worked out well at the beginning. But then I had to quit during the grass season, ”said the 40-year-old. “I will miss it,” is his conclusion. He is curious to see how Team Europe will perform without him. Of course he hopes for a victory for his team, according to the tennis legend.
At the event, analogous to the Ryder Cup in golf, a team from Europe competes against a team from the world. So far, the Europeans have always triumphed. Federer also made a major contribution to the previous dominance. “I was not only able to help with the points (editor’s note – there are – depending on the day of the tournament – points to be won for the victories; the team that wins first that reaches 13 points), but also with my personality and leadership role – I was able to help.” , says Federer. In addition to the Swiss, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are also missing the other two representatives of the “Big Three”.
US Open winners Daniil Medwedew (Russia), Stefanos Tsitsipas (Greece), Olympic champions Alexander Zverev (Hamburg), Andrej Rublew (Russia), Matteo Berrettini (Italy) and Casper Ruud (Norway) are nominated for the defending champion from Europe. The World team consists of Felix Auger-Aliassime, Denis Shapovalov (both Canada), Diego Schwartzman (Argentina), Reilly Opelka, John Isner (both USA) and Nick Kyrgios (Australia).
