Housing – Wolfsburg – Some students are still looking for accommodation before the start of university – Business

Göttingen (dpa / lni) – Around a month before lectures begin, students are still looking for a place to stay at some university locations in Lower Saxony. A week ago, the Göttingen student union counted 1,420 open dormitory applications for the upcoming semester. There is also great demand at the Studentenwerk Ostniedersachsen, which looks after dormitories in Braunschweig, Wolfsburg and Hildesheim, among others.

In Göttingen, where the courses for the winter semester begin on October 25, the waiting list, according to the Studentenwerk, is about as long as it was before the pandemic. “Domestic interest has recovered,” said spokeswoman Anett Reyer-Günther. There are around 4800 places to live in Göttingen. A good 700 new rental contracts were signed for the upcoming winter semester.

At the Studentenwerk Ostniedersachsen, a good 90 percent of all places are currently occupied – of 4630 places, around 300 are still free. There are regional differences: At large locations such as Braunschweig and Hildesheim, the occupancy rate is higher. Before the pandemic, there were almost no rooms available in any dormitory. Now the demand is about as high again: There are currently more applications than rooms are available. According to spokeswoman Christiane Thoroe, many students keep several options open at the same time.
