Facebook launches new product for video calling

Portal Go and Portal+ are new series from Facebook’s Portal lineup that function as video calling devices.

Facebook surprisingly launched its second product this month. This device is a new model of Portal, a video calling device, namely Portal Go and Portal+. According to reports from Gizmochina (22/9), Portal Go comes as the first battery-powered Portal, while Portal+ comes with a new design and smaller display.

The Portal Go has a 10-inch screen and unlike other models, the Portal Go has an internal battery that allows the device to be carried around while making calls. Facebook says the battery supports up to 5 hours of Messenger video calls and 14 hours when the screen is turned off.

Just like its predecessor, Portal Go has a camera wide angle 12MP which will automatically follow whoever the lens is focusing on. The camera also doubles as a bluetooth speaker, which now supports Spotify and Pandora.

On the other hand, the new Portal+ measures 14 inches (2140 x 1440), smaller than the previous Portal+ which had a 15.6-inch screen. The device is also equipped with a swivel stand that can present both landscape and portrait views.

The Portal+ has a 12MP camera and there is a physical button to release the camera and microphone. The company announced several new software features, such as Household Mode, which allows users to share Portals with their families.

Portal also now supports other video conferencing applications such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams. However, this support will only be available in December.

At a cheaper price, Portal Go sells for USD 199 or around Rp. 2.8 million, while Portal + is priced at USD 399 or around Rp. 5.6 million.
