Earlier, smaller cracks were observed in the Lange Jaap, as the tower is also called.
“The conclusion is that it is currently not possible to guarantee the constructive safety of the tower,” writes Minister Barbara Visser of Infrastructure and Water Management to the House of Representatives. “The risk of falling, especially in combination with expected wind, is such that the environment must be made safe.”

The lighthouse, which dates from 1877, was no longer accessible to the public and no longer manned. Further research is needed ‘to calculate what the cracks mean for the structure’, according to the ministry. The systems located in the lighthouse, such as the shore radar system for shipping, still work.
According to the ministry, Rijkswaterstaat manages several old lighthouses. “These will be further investigated to see whether this problem affects several lighthouses.”
