Did you use prohibited substances or not? Māris Olte, a deputy of Madona County Council, has been caught in the crossfire of such an issue after a video published on social networking sites. It shows a Member sniffing a white powder at a party. Olte says the substance is legal and legally available in Germany. It is planned to discuss what happened in Madona County Council. Mayor Agris Lungevičs (Latvian Farmers’ Union) admits that an ethics commission could be convened.
The video of the party from the trip to Iceland, which shows Māris Olte, a member of the Madona City Council, is being broadcast both on news exchange platforms and on social networking sites. Olte calls it the riding of a young man – his companion – in which he got involved by mistake.
“Improvisation also resulted in a video that was meant to just look what it looked like and then delete it. And it wasn’t deleted.
Clearly guilty, obviously I was there. They told me it was something like snuff, they had it with them. But we went through all the border controls, “said Olte. He emphasizes that white powder is a legally available substance that is used, for example, at the Oktoberfest festival in Germany. This video has not missed the law enforcement agencies either. video, but no further comments can be made at this time because the exact circumstances of what happened are not known.
Madona Mayor Agris Lungevičs, with whom Māris Olte participated in the elections from one list, believes that a public person should think especially about what impression can be left in the public space.
“It is definitely necessary to discuss with Māris, his own opinion and outline of what happened. And then we will look further at how to act. Such an atypical case. The municipality does not face it often. Therefore, there is no standard practice on how to act in this case.
The municipality has an ethics commission, it will probably look at this issue there, but we have not yet decided on it, “said Lungevičs.
“Let’s judge, look. I’m not holding that place. If I think it’s a sufficient violation, I’ll sit further and work in my county as I can in any other way. I’ll be wrong. It was a mistake, of course,” Olte said.
Māris Olte is not a member of any party, but he participated in the elections from the joint list of the Latvian Association of Regions (LRA) and the Latvian Farmers’ Union. LRA chairman Edvards Smiltēns pointed out that instead of Olte, situations that could be negatively interpreted in the public space would be avoided. In turn, the chairman of the Farmers’ Union Armands Krauze said that according to the law, people are free to do what they want.
