Unides Podem warns that the privatization of the castle of Santa Bárbara will hinder the access of the citizens of Alicante and visitors to its historical and cultural heritage.
The municipal group indicates that there has been a premeditated abandonment of the castle by the mayor, Luis Barcala, to justify its outsourcing to a private company.
The coalition accuses the deputy mayor, Mari Carmen Sánchez, and the Popular Party of converting “the greatest historical and cultural heritage symbol” of the city into a private business “to be exploited by a company whose objective is its profit balance.”
Unides Podem calls it worrying that spaces “that until now were of universal public access can now be enjoyed only after paying a ticket.” The coalition adds that this is exclusive for the population in a precarious situation, who will not be able to access this Asset of Cultural Interest on equal terms.
Xavi López, spokesman, points out that the tourist management and revitalization service comes before the Castle Use Plan itself, which has not yet been put out to tender. He considers it something “inconceivable”, since this contract, stipulated for two years, “could later be overthrown by the Plan if it is understood that the fortress’s patrimony has been violated.”
López demands the return of the powers of the Castle of Santa Barbara and that of San Fernando to the Department of Culture, since since the beginning of the year they had been transferred to the Tourist Board. Also bet on a totally public model.
