Marcos Alonso, a Spanish defender who campaigns for Chelsea, has announced that he will not return to his knees before the opening whistle of Premier League games, considering that the gesture is weakening.
“I am totally against racism and against all kinds of discrimination, but I prefer to point to the emblem where it is written ‘No to Racism’, as they do in other sports and in football in other countries. I think that kneeling down is losing strength,” he said.
The gesture, it should be remembered, began to be used in June 2020, following the Black Lives Matter movement, after the death of George Floyd in the United States.
