Distance and access controls in and in front of supermarkets, securing the transport of money and valuables, protecting events and buildings, controls at airports and train stations – all these tasks are performed by employees in the security industry.
On September 17, 2021, the Krefeld customs inspected some of the people and employers working in the security industry as part of a nationwide focus check. 40 customs officers from the Financial Control Unit worked in two shifts into the night in their area of responsibility in Krefeld, Mönchengladbach and in the district of Viersen. The customs officers checked, in particular, the proper payment of the prescribed minimum wage, compliance with social security obligations, the unlawful receipt of social benefits and the illegal employment of foreigners. A total of 102 people were questioned about their employment relationships and business documents were examined in 16 companies. So far, the following suspected cases have emerged:
Minimum wage violations in two cases
Withholding and embezzlement of wages in 28 cases
Benefits fraud in four cases
Failure to submit an immediate report in two cases

The financial control of undeclared work of the customs administration regularly carries out national as well as regional focus audits throughout the year with an increased use of personnel in order to maintain the special preventive character of a high number of audits in certain industries. This is an important instrument for reducing social acceptance of undeclared work and illegal employment.
