In the Metropolitan Cemetery this Sunday there was live music, family photos, an artistic exhibition, a mass, an orchid exhibition and even launching balloons into the sky. With these activities, the event called “The world united by life” was held.

It has been celebrated for ten years simultaneously in more than 70 countries on five continents. It is an initiative of the Latin American Association of Cemeteries and Funeral Services (Alpar), an organization of which the cemeteries of the Board of Charity form part. It aims to reaffirm and exalt the value of life, even more so in these times of pandemic in which many lost their family members due to COVID-19.

With these activities, the directors of this cemetery try to change the negative connotation that this type of place has. They have the idea of ​​opening a cafeteria for those who visit them.

“We want them to come and spend quality time with the family or alone, to go for a walk, for families to take advantage of the fifteen hectares we have to have a picnic, read a book or just relax and spend time with those who are no longer with us,” he said. Camilo Torres, general manager of the Metropolitan Pantheon, where this Sunday a stage was erected on which artists such as Danilo Rosero, Roy Maruri and Olga María Oleagoitia performed.

Torres mentioned that the cemetery of the Board of Charity has just turned nine years old and that some 1,900 people rest on its premises.

The official also stressed that this year the death rate that existed in 2019, prior to the pandemic, has already returned, but says that in 2020 there was a surplus of 14,000 deaths.

“Every year in Guayaquil some 13,000 people die; in 2020 there were 27,000 deaths in the city, ”said Torres, who highlights that the event to celebrate life is open to the general public, not only to relatives who have their relatives buried in that cemetery. (I)
