By entering the great room of 1is floor of casemate A of Fort de Queuleu, the president of the association, Thierry Nicolas, is sorry: “It deteriorates very quickly, it is no longer waterproof. One morning when I entered the room was filled with a deep fog. This room was used by the Gestapo when the casemate was transformed into an internment camp in October 1943. Today, it serves as a reception area for the 1,000 to 2,000 schoolchildren who visit the site each year. A place of memory in peril.

Five years ago, the State, the Department, the Region and the City of Metz released one million euros to undertake urgent conservation work on the casemate. These credits are committed. But they will not be enough to ensure the protection of the entire building. “The public authorities have already provided us with invaluable help, thanks Paule Einig, Honorary President. We must now go and find additional funds elsewhere. Three years ago, with the help of the Eurometropolis, we started discussions with the Heritage Foundation in order to set up a subscription. ”
This was launched on Saturday, on the occasion of European Heritage Days. “We have set the target at € 100,000,” says Thierry Nicolas. This subscription is open to everyone, individuals and companies. We can also accept donations of material or skills. All those who wish to help us preserve the memory of this place in one way or another are welcome. “

Tax reduction
As with all subscriptions organized by the Heritage Foundation, donors will be able to benefit from an income tax reduction equivalent to 66% of the amount of the donation, up to a limit of 20% of taxable income. The reduction even reaches 75% for the real estate wealth tax and 60% for the corporation tax.
With these 100,000 €, the association intends to restore and protect the rooms on the first floor. “We will thus be able to welcome the public in better conditions, but also to exhibit the collections of the Resistance Museum in Thionville, as well as those of Pascal Georgen,” explains Thierry Nicolas. The works will be carried out under the contracting authority of the Eurometropolis of Metz.
