Online Shopping Consumers Rise 70 Percent in Southeast Asia, Indonesia is the Champion

IDXChannel – The growth of online shoppers is recorded to increase by more than 70 million people in six countries southeast Asia since pandemic started to hit. This trend of increasing the number of people shopping online occurs because the governments of these countries encourage people to stay at home, in order to slow the spread of the corona virus.

As a result of these mobility restrictions, Southeast Asia is experiencing a rapid increase in the adoption of digital services such as e-commerce, food delivery, and online payment methods.

Citing a Facebook report by Dan Bain & Company, Friday (17/9/2021), they have conducted a survey of more than 16,000 people in Indonesia. Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam project that the number of digital consumers in Southeast Asia will reach 350 million by the end of this year.

The report predicts the number of online shoppers in Southeast Asia will reach 380 million by 2026. Among the countries surveyed, Indonesia as the largest economy in Southeast Asia continues to experience the highest growth. Its digital consumer population is predicted to grow by around 15 percent, from 144 million in 2020 to 165 million in 2021.

Although it has a negative impact on various sectors, especially health, the Covid-19 pandemic has had a good impact on the e-commerce market. Various Southeast Asian countries that have implemented restrictions to prevent the spread of the pandemic have made the e-commerce market grow rapidly.

Over the next five years, Southeast Asia’s e-commerce sales are also projected to keep pace with other countries’ growth of 14 percent per year.
