The leader of the expedition is 38-year-old billionaire Jared Isaacman. This experienced private pilot dreamed of his journey into space and, as he says, he wanted to fulfill his dream by providing additional seats in the ship for money that will be donated to humanitarian purposes. The help is to go to the Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, which focuses on serious children’s diseases, especially leukemia and other cancers.
Hayley Arceneaux, a 29-year-old assistant doctor at the hospital, who is battling cancer herself as a child in a Memphis facility, is flying into space with Issacman. Among other things, he is the first person in history to ever fly into space with a prosthesis; when she was ten, she underwent St. Jude is an operation in which her knee was replaced and a titanium rod was inserted into her left femur.
Arceneaux is still limping and suffering from occasional leg pain, but has received permission to fly from SpaceX. She will serve as the crew doctor. Other members include forty-two-year-old data engineer Chris Sembroski and 51-year-old educator Sian Proctor, the first black spacecraft pilot.
