The teachers received two tweets and had to know which of them was written by the real Kalousek. However, 72 percent of teachers answered incorrectly, 28 percent scored.

The survey also showed that every tenth teacher judges the information completely incorrectly.

“Ten percent of them were not able to recognize misinformation, so every tenth teacher considers the so-called disinformation sites to be trustworthy,” said project leader Kamil Kopecký from Palacký University.

The survey showed that 62 percent of educators can correctly determine the veracity of information about the European Union, compared to 68 percent for topics related to covid. About half of the teachers were sure of the current and historical information.

Only 3 percent of teachers teach media education
The average age of the teachers who participated in the survey was 47-48 years, the vast majority of them were women. “They don’t know social networks or influencers. Eighty percent have never encountered media education, “said Kopecký.

Almost half of the teachers stated in the survey that they do not teach media literacy. “It is necessary that there is some training in media education for teachers,” said Kopecký.

He reminded that the Czech School Inspectorate also stated that the media literacy of pupils is not dazzling and that pupils fail to recognize, for example, advertising or fake news.

However, media education often has nowhere to fit into school curricula.

“Nine out of ten teachers agree that media education is important, but at the same time eight out of ten do not agree that the time allowance for media education should be increased at the expense of other subjects,” Kopecký stated.

Some educators teach their pupils and students to orient themselves in the media world in other subjects.

“Fifty-six percent of them use computer science classes, 54 percent civics, 44 percent in the Czech language. Only three percent of teachers teach media education as a separate subject, “said the researcher.
