Putin Insists Russia Needs To Work With Taliban

MOSCOW – President Russia Vladimir Putin said the Moscow and Beijing-led security bloc must take the lead in ensuring the Taliban keeps its promises to prevent terrorism and drug trafficking.

Putin made the statement on Friday (17/9/2021). “The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) must use its potential to stimulate the new Afghan authorities in fulfilling their promise to normalize life and bring security in Afghanistan,” Putin said.

He spoke by video link at an eight-member SCO summit held in neighboring Afghanistan, Tajikistan.

Countries allied with Russia and China held a series of meetings in the Central Asian country this week.

Moscow has been cautiously optimistic about the Taliban since coming to power last month after a series of flash attacks in Afghanistan.

However, the Kremlin said it was in no rush to recognize Afghanistan’s new authority.
